Nathan McSweeney axed : Nathan McSweeney’s debut run with the Australian team has concluded, as national selectors prepare for a significant change ahead of the Boxing Day Test.
As initially reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, the 25-year-old has been dropped, potentially opening the door for teenager Sam Konstas to make his debut.
It would mark a remarkable ascent for the 19-year-old, who has already notched up three centuries this summer and has been making a strong case for Test selection.
Cricket Australia has since announced the changes for the Melbourne and Sydney matches.
Major Changes Announced for Australia’s Boxing Day Test Squad
The squad gives us flexibility in structuring the XI,” said George Bailey.
Sam earns his first call-up to the Test squad. His unique batting style brings something different, and we’re excited to see his game continue to evolve.
We remain confident in Nathan’s ability and temperament to succeed at the Test level in the future. Leaving him out was a tough decision.
“Batting at the top of the order has been a challenge throughout the series, and we want to explore the possibility of a different lineup for the next two matches.
Struggling to handle spearhead Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the Australian batting order, his strike rate of 34 has raised concerns among selectors.
They may also contemplate bringing in Josh Inglis to launch a counter-attack against the Indian pacers.
McSweeney, not a natural opener, has primarily batted at No. 3 or No. 4 throughout his first-class career in the Sheffield Shield.
Beau Webster, Sean Abbott, and Jhye Richardson are also vying for a spot and have been named in the squad. Meanwhile, fan favorite Scott Boland will have the opportunity to play at the MCG in Josh Hazlewood’s absence.
“With Josh Hazlewood unavailable, Jhye offers additional options in the fast-bowling department,” Bailey said.
“It’s been great to see his successful return during the early stages of the domestic summer.
