How the Case Was Solved
Investigators had kept the evidence from 1974. In 2023, Utah’s state crime lab got new technology. It can pull DNA from small or old samples, even if they are mixed. This found one male DNA profile. It was entered into CODIS, the FBI’s national DNA database. In March, Florida authorities said it matched Bundy.
What the Sheriff Said
“We can now say without a doubt that Theodore ‘Ted’ Bundy did in fact murder Laura Ann Aime in the fall of 1974,” Sheriff Smith said. He said Bundy admitted to the killing before his execution in Florida in 1989. But there was not enough evidence back then to confirm it.
About Ted Bundy
CBS News reported that at least 30 deaths of women and girls in several US states have been linked to Bundy. At the time of Laura’s death, he was studying law at the University of Utah.
