Bankstown Hospital : Plans to construct a new hospital in south-west Sydney have received a significant boost with a $700 million investment, NSW Premier Chris Minns has confirmed.
The upcoming Bankstown Hospital will feature a range of critical services, including an emergency department, operating theatres, an intensive care unit, as well as surgical, medical, mental health, and women’s and children’s health services.
The hospital project, originally announced by the Berejiklian government in 2019 with an allocated budget of $1.3 billion, had faced years of delays before this latest funding injection.
Bankstown to Get $2 Billion Hospital After Years of Delays
Premier Chris Minns today revealed an additional $700 million in funding for the new hospital, bringing the total investment to $2 billion.
He also confirmed the location for the facility, announcing that the Bankstown TAFE on Chapel Road will be demolished to make way for the hospital.
“If there’s a natural Australian scepticism toward government announcements, there’s not much I can do to change that,” Minns remarked.
Premier Minns Confirms New Site and Funding Boost for Hospital Project
I’m optimistic that the people of Bankstown will see this hospital become a reality and fully constructed,” Minns said.
The TAFE campus will be relocated across the road to the new Western Sydney University Tower, with some classes shifting to the Padstow campus.
Meanwhile, the current Lidcombe-Bankstown Hospital will continue to operate as a local health facility.
The former Liberal government failed to advance a site for the new Bankstown Hospital, leaving the people of south-west Sydney waiting for six years,” said Health Minister Ryan Park.
During that period, rising construction costs have outpaced the funding originally set aside by the Liberals.
Now, the Minns Labor Government is taking real action by committing the necessary funds to see the project through to completion. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with the hospital expected to be operational by 2031.
