Wayne Bennett coaching rumoursRabbitohs CEO Blake Solly has firmly stated that Wayne Bennett isn’t going anywhere, issuing a strong warning to Peter V’landys against trying to lure the legendary coach away.
Now in his second stint with South Sydney, the 75-year-old has been with the club for less than a year, yet has already overseen significant progress despite a string of injuries.
Bennett is locked into a three-year contract with the Rabbitohs, keeping him at the helm until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Still, that hasn’t stopped speculation linking the seven-time premiership coach to rival clubs and even the soon-to-be-open Kangaroos role.
Mal Meninga is widely tipped to lead the Perth Bears expansion team in 2027, with the league also set to introduce a Papua New Guinea franchise the year after.
Speculation Grows Around Bennett’s Future Despite Contract
Bennett’s name has been floated as a potential candidate to lead the PNG franchise, but the timing of his contract with South Sydney would make that move extremely challenging.
Speaking on 2GB’s Mornings With Mark Levy, Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly was quick to shut down any speculation linking Bennett to other coaching roles.
No whispers,” he said.
I know how fond Peter is of Wayne, and I’m sure he’d love to see him take on the inaugural coaching role at PNG, just as he did with the Dolphins.
But my message to Peter is clear — we’ll be fighting hard to keep him.
Rabbitohs Determined to Extend Bennett’s Tenure Beyond 2027
Wayne is signed through to the end of 2027, but we’re eager to extend that commitment. Once the season concludes, we plan to sit down with him during the off-season to talk about the prospect of him staying on.
His comeback to the club has been outstanding, and it’s evident he holds a strong passion for Souths. We’re optimistic he’ll continue with us well beyond his current contract.
