It came out of the blue,” Pavlich shared on Nine’s Today show on Wednesday. “I was contacted via text on a Saturday morning while juggling my three kids’ school sports schedules.

But after completing the process with the recruiter, meeting with the club, and going through the interview, I was absolutely thrilled.

I feel incredibly humbled by the opportunity that lies ahead.

Sydney Swans’ Recent Performance and Upcoming Match

Harley will step down as Sydney Swans CEO at the end of the season to take on a newly created role as the AFL’s chief operating officer.

Matthew Pavlich, a former AFL star who booted 700 goals during his illustrious career from 2000 to 2016, was confirmed as the Swans’ new chief executive last week.

The 43-year-old holds a Bachelor of Science and an MBA from the University of Western Australia. Since retiring from football, he has served in various AFL roles, co-founded a brand partnerships business, and worked in media, including as a sports presenter for 9News Perth.

Managing a $70 Million Business: Pavlich on the Biggest Challenge

It’s a huge responsibility, and I feel like I’ve been preparing for this for a long time,” Pavlich said about his new position.

When asked about the biggest challenge, Pavlich pointed to managing a business with annual revenue exceeding $70 million.

Building Relationships with Fans, Members, and Partners

In Sydney, I don’t know many people yet, so I’ll need to quickly immerse myself in the community — meeting fans, members, and all our commercial and corporate partners. There will be plenty of groundwork to cover when I arrive, Pavlich said.

In a rematch of the 2024 grand final, the Swans secured a surprise two-point victory over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Saturday.
