Weekend Heatwave: Fire Danger Soars Across NSW and Queensland

Heatwave in NSW and Queensland : A severe heatwave is set to elevate fire risks in NSW and Queensland starting today and continuing into the weekend.

Greater Sydney and nearby regions were under a total fire ban this afternoon, as over 30 bushfires and grassfires blazed across the area.

By 2:30 pm, Sydney Airport recorded a scorching 38.8 degrees, with Bankstown, Camden, and Penrith all exceeding 37 degrees.

Severe Heatwave Sparks Fire Warnings Across NSW and Queensland

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned that extreme heat will affect eastern NSW and Queensland from today through the weekend.

According to the BoM, the combination of high temperatures and gusty winds could lead to increased fire danger.

As of 12:30 pm, the NSW Rural Fire Service reported approximately 32 bush and grassfires burning across the state.

Extreme Heat and Fire Danger for NSW and Queensland This Weekend

Seven of these fires remained uncontained and may have been sparked by lightning strikes.

Some were burning near Hornsby in Sydney’s north and Liverpool in the south.

Extreme fire danger was declared today for Greater Sydney, the Greater Hunter, and north-western NSW.

NSW could also face severe thunderstorms this afternoon, ahead of a southerly buster expected to move through to the coast later in the day.

In Queensland, a heatwave is stretching from Cape York to the southeast, with maximum temperatures ranging from the high 30s to mid-40s, according to the BoM.

Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the high 20s.

The BoM has cautioned that areas including Brisbane, Biloela, Gympie, Ipswich, Julia Creek, Longreach, Oakey, Stanthorpe, Taroom, and Winton will be heavily impacted by the December heat.

Meanwhile, Victoria and South Australia experienced a cool change yesterday, though both states are still battling bushfires.

As NSW and Queensland endure sweltering conditions, Victoria will see partly cloudy skies, scattered showers, and moderate temperatures.
