Police Raid in Melbourne Linked to Fatal House Fire That Killed Katie Tangey
The raid follows multiple anonymous tips police received regarding the arson attack, including one call made using a pseudonym.
Investigators are urging that caller to come forward again with more information.
Police suspect the blaze was a deliberate arson attack connected to the illegal tobacco trade, but believe the offenders mistakenly targeted the wrong house.
CCTV footage from the January 16 incident shows two individuals exiting a dark-coloured vehicle—believed to be similar to a BMW X3 or X5—parked outside the home around 2am.

A significant explosion” followed shortly after, and the two individuals fled the scene—one of them seen carrying what appeared to be a jerry can, according to footage from the home’s Ring camera.
Moments after the Dover Street home was set on fire, a dark-coloured vehicle was spotted heading north on Forsyth Road in Truganina.
Katie Tangey, 27, was inside the house at the time, looking after it for her brother, who was away on his honeymoon.
She called triple-zero reporting the house was engulfed in flames, but tragically, she and the family’s golden retriever died at the scene.
Police said the three-storey townhouse was completely destroyed in the blaze.
Investigators are confident that Katie Tangey was completely innocent and had no involvement in the illicit tobacco trade,” police said in a statement today.
They confirmed that a “major investigation” is ongoing to determine the motive behind the deadly attack and to identify those responsible.
We believe this case is solvable and that we are getting closer to the truth,” said Detective Inspector Chris Murray. “If you have any information—no matter how small—please come forward and do the right thing.”
Our commitment is to bring as much justice and closure as possible to Katie Tangey’s family,” he continued. “While we can’t bring Katie back, we owe it to her and her loved ones to hold those responsible for this horrific act accountable.”
