Ball debris on Sydney beaches : The investigation into balls of debris discovered on several Sydney beaches has been broadened after more were found on the Northern Beaches this week.
The debris washed ashore at Manly, Dee Why, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Freshwater, North and South Curl Curl, North Steyne, and North Narrabeen on Wednesday.
The initial balls were first spotted in the Eastern Suburbs back in October.
Investigation into Mysterious Ball Debris on Sydney Beaches
The balls have been found to contain human-related pollutants, including hair, illicit drugs, fatty acids, and soap. However, their origin remains unknown.
“Investigating pollution incidents from unidentified sources is extremely challenging, but we are committed to working with other government agencies and exploring all possible origins, with site inspections starting today,” said Adam Gilligan, EPA Director of Operations.
“This investigation will consider potential land-based sources, such as Sydney Water’s sewerage and stormwater systems, as well as sea-based sources, including cruise ships or other vessels,” he added.

“The same chemical analysis is being conducted on the debris balls found this week on the Northern Beaches as was performed on similar debris found on other beaches across NSW.
“Preliminary results will be shared as soon as they become available.”
The public is advised not to touch the debris balls and to report any sightings to the EPA.
