Bondi Junction Attack : Inquest Reveals Joel Cauchi’s Preoccupation with Death and ViolenceBefore he carried out a deadly attack that left six people dead at a bustling metro shopping center, Joel Cauchi had reportedly been fixated on weapons, violence, and mass killings, a coroner has heard.
Cauchi, who had fallen through gaps in the mental health system, armed himself with a knife and went on a stabbing spree at Sydney’s Bondi Junction Westfield on April 13, 2024.
The 40-year-old was ultimately shot dead by police after killing six people and injuring 10 others, including a nine-month-old baby.

As the inquest into the tragic incident commenced today, counsel assisting, Peggy Dwyer SC, revealed that Joel Cauchi had gone untreated for five years prior to the mass stabbing, despite being diagnosed with schizophrenia during his teenage years.
Dwyer described the 40-year-old’s online search history leading up to the attack as “distressing.
Mr. Cauchi was deeply fixated on weapons, violence, and mass killing,” she told the NSW Coroners Court.

His fascination with death and murder extended to online searches about serial killers and mass attacks, both in Australia and abroad, including the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.
The court heard that notes found on Joel Cauchi’s phone included references to planning an attack at a shopping mall using a knife.
Dwyer stated that Cauchi’s search history reflected a deeply unwell individual who was living far from his parents in Queensland, who had previously managed to keep his behavior in check.
Expert psychiatric evidence would show that Cauchi was “floridly psychotic” as he moved through Westfield during the attack, Dwyer added.
Throughout the five-week inquest, coroner Teresa O’Sullivan will explore Cauchi’s background, including the ways police engaged with him during his largely transient lifestyle.
She will also investigate any possible failures in Cauchi’s mental health care following his schizophrenia diagnosis.
The actions of security guards and the media’s response to the tragedy will likewise come under scrutiny.
Coroner O’Sullivan will later deliver her findings on the events and may issue recommendations to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The victims of the attack were Dawn Singleton, 25, Ashlee Good, 38, Jade Young, 47, Pikria Darchia, 55, Yixuan Cheng, 27, and security guard Faraz Tahir, 30.
Ahead of the tragedy’s anniversary in April, a memorial was set up at Bondi Junction, featuring photographs and floral tributes honoring those who lost their lives.
