Premier David Crisafulli announced on Tuesday that the new stadium will serve as the centerpiece of the 2032 Olympics before becoming the home ground for the Lions and cricket post-Games.
Until then, the Gabba will continue to host AFL home games before being demolished to make way for residential development.
Currently, the Gabba accommodates 37,000 spectators for AFL matches, with the Lions selling out nine of their 12 games in the 2024 season.

Lions CEO Greg Swann expressed his excitement over the announcement, acknowledging the Gabba’s legacy while emphasizing the need for change.
“The Gabba has been a fantastic home for 30 years, but the city and the Lions have outgrown it. With our membership set to exceed 70,000 this year, and the venue nearing the end of its lifespan, the time is right for a new stadium,” he said.
Located just 1km from Brisbane’s CBD, Victoria Park will serve as the heart of the Olympic precinct, featuring the athlete’s village and a swimming venue.
Before the official announcement, co-captain Lachie Neale shared his thoughts on the Gabba’s atmosphere, appreciating its “old school” charm but acknowledging the need for an upgrade.
“When we face some of the big Melbourne clubs, the Gabba feels a bit too small. But it’s a testament to our fans, the club, and how we’ve grown our brand,” he said.
“I’m sure by the time the new stadium is ready, I won’t be playing anymore… but it’ll be great to watch games there,” he said.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon expressed enthusiasm about the development of a cutting-edge stadium in the heart of Brisbane.
“Our fans have a strong tradition of traveling to games, and I’m excited to collaborate with Brisbane and the Government on the planning process. Once the stadium is built, our goal is to fill Victoria Park just as we’ve consistently sold out Lions’ games at the Gabba,” he said.
