Brendan Fevola praised for stepping in over ugly homophobia incident
AFL legend Brendan Fevola has been widely commended for his intervention during a troubling incident that took place on The Amazing Race Australia.
Fevola, the former Carlton and Brisbane forward now competing on the celebrity edition of the popular reality show alongside his daughter Leni, became involved in a controversial situation on the show’s premiere night.
SAS Australia host Ant Middleton and his brother Dan were unexpectedly removed from the program before the second episode aired. Host Beau Ryan briefly explained in a voiceover at the beginning of the show that there had been a “breach” prior to the episode continuing as planned.
Ryan revealed the incident occurred “in the hotel around the pool area” during the first night of filming in Nepal.

Fevola stepped in to defend the brothers and confronted the show’s producers with an ultimatum.
I know this is a pretty sensitive topic, and obviously some things happened earlier in the show. We’ve talked about it, and I understand you guys can’t really go into too much detail about what occurred, but I was there,” Fevola told FoxFM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick show.

I saw exactly what one specific contestant did to you guys, said it to me, and had also said it to you earlier, along with a few other similar things.
Because I hadn’t really been aware of what was happening, and you guys having to endure those slurs—the homophobic insults thrown at you throughout the day—was absolutely unacceptable.
I confronted the person, and whatever unfolded after that, happened.
Then I literally went back to my room—something people don’t know—and I was shaken. I don’t usually get rattled; it takes a lot to unsettle me. I’ve faced some serious situations before, and my attitude has always been, ‘It’ll be alright.
Fevola revealed that he gave the show’s production company an ultimatum: either the person was removed, or he and his daughter would walk away.
I was shaking, and Leni asked, ‘What’s wrong, Dad?’ I told her, ‘This is what happened. We’re leaving the show tomorrow—if that person is still part of it, we’re done.’ And she said, ‘Yep, Dad, we’re done.’ So, we communicated the same message to the producers, he said.

I went into their room—normally you’re not allowed to enter anyone else’s—but I just wanted to check on them because I was really shaken.
For me to feel that way, and knowing what you guys went through, I was genuinely worried about you.

So I walked in, and there were about 400 people there—the production team, the producers, security, everyone.
I believe you said something like, ‘This happens to me every day. People say these things every day.’ And for you guys to have to endure that is absolutely wrong.
I’m sorry that you had to go through such a terrible experience, and whatever comes of it now will unfold in due time.

But I’m really glad I met you guys and became good friends, because you are wonderful people who did absolutely nothing wrong. You came on the show to have a good time, not to be treated like that.
What happened to you was completely unacceptable, and I hated seeing it.
It made those days extremely difficult, but we all kept going, and that was important.
Sassy Scott, whose real name is Scott O’Halloran, expressed his gratitude to Fevola for helping to defuse the situation.
“The most important thing to say is thank you so much, because without you, we have no idea how far it could have escalated — especially considering the multiple incidents we’ve talked about. It happened over six times,” he said.
What Sassy Scott Said About Brendan Fevola’s Brave Action
You did what so many people fail to do these days: you stood up for what you knew was wrong and defended what was right.
Luke and I are incredibly grateful that you were there, especially since there weren’t many people around. You really saved the day, and we appreciate you so much.
You’ve become a very important person in our lives because you stepped up when so many others chose to look the other way in situations like that. We’re truly thankful for you.
Brendan and Leni Fevola were the last team to arrive at the pit stop in episode five, though it wasn’t an elimination round.
