Billy Walters Broncos : Although Billy Walters missed the grand final due to injury, his choice to remain with Brisbane after his father’s dismissal has paid off with an unforgettable premiership moment.
Billy Walters initially wanted to leave the Broncos after the club sacked his father as coach.
However, just a year later, he found himself on stage lifting the premiership trophy — invited up by captain Adam Reynolds despite missing the grand final due to injury.
It’s been a rollercoaster year for Walters, who watched his father Kevin get abruptly dismissed by the club only a season after leading Brisbane to the grand final, where they came within minutes of victory.
The decision infuriated the versatile player at first, but his perspective soon changed — and it led to a moment he’ll cherish forever.
When that happened last year, I honestly didn’t want to be part of the club,” he admitted. I never thought we’d be here, and I definitely didn’t think I’d be standing here celebrating with them.
Billy Walters’ Loyalty Rewarded After Broncos’ Premiership Win
I sat down with my wife to talk things through — about what and who truly matter to me. I realized how much I love the fans and my teammates, and I just couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.
I’m really glad I decided to stay. This past week perfectly reflects the last 12 months — a real rollercoaster filled with incredible highs and tough lows.
There were a couple of days when I genuinely wanted to walk away. I didn’t even feel like attending the presentation night, which was held a couple of weeks after everything went down. But it was actually Dad who called and told me I needed to go and be part of it.

I think that night really helped me make up my mind — I love the players and the fans too much, and I just couldn’t picture myself anywhere else.
It was a daring move to let go of a club legend like Kevin Walters, but Michael Maguire’s arrival silenced the critics as he carried on his remarkable run as coach.
A Year of Highs and Lows for Billy Walters
Maguire guided New Zealand to victory over Australia in 2023, led the Blues to a memorable State of Origin triumph on rival turf in the 2024 decider, and has now ended Brisbane’s 19-year premiership drought in his very first season at the helm.
He got a bit lucky with that one last year with the Blues, so I won’t go into that,” Broncos and Maroons lock Patrick Carrigan joked.
He’s tough but fair — and he genuinely cares. The harder you work, the luckier you get, and that’s exactly what he’s instilled in us. I’m sure he’s got a few surprises waiting for us next pre-season.
As for Walters, he missed the grand final after suffering an ACL injury during last month’s thrilling victory over Canberra.
Despite being sidelined, Walters experienced a special moment on Sunday night when Adam Reynolds invited him onto the stage to lift the trophy following Reece Walsh’s stunning performance that sealed a remarkable comeback win.

It meant the world to me,” he said. “Of course, I’d have loved to be out there with the boys and earn a ring, but the next best thing was getting to raise the trophy at season’s end.
Usually, only the captain gets that honour, so it meant a lot that ‘Reyno’ brought me up to make sure I felt part of the celebration.
It was honestly the best feeling in the world.
