The consumer commission has warned that over 34,000 power banks—recalled due to the risk of severe burns and property damage—are still being used by consumers.

These portable battery packs, equipped with highly flammable rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, are meant for charging mobile phones and other devices while on the move.

Since 2020, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has listed 17 power bank recalls on its Product Safety website.

Over 34,000 Hazardous Power Banks Still in Consumers’ Hands

Of these recalls, nine occurred within the past 16 months.

However, thousands of the affected power banks have yet to be returned for a refund or replacement.

Some consumers have sustained serious burn injuries, and others have experienced property damage due to power banks overheating and igniting,” said ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe.

Recalled Devices Pose Risk of Burns, Fire, and Property Damage

Most incidents have happened while the power bank was charging a phone or other device, meaning the device was likely near the user at the time of failure—raising the risk of injury.

Improper manufacturing, handling, storage, or disposal of power banks can cause them to catch fire, explode, or release toxic gases.

The ACCC advises users of lithium-ion battery power banks to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep the devices in a cool, dry location, and avoid placing them on flammable surfaces like beds, sofas, or carpets.

Consumers are strongly urged to stop using any recalled power bank immediately.

Among the recalled models at risk of overheating and catching fire are the Quad Lock MAG battery pack and the BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K.

Several models—such as the Anker Power Bank Models A1257, A1647, A1681, A1689, the SnapWireless PowerPack Slim (Gen 1), Baseus Magnetic Wireless Charging Power Banks 6000mAh 20W, and the MagMove 5K Power Bank—have been linked to incidents resulting in harm.

ACCC Urges Immediate Action and Safe Use of Power Banks

One particular model, the Baseus Power Bank 65W 30000mAh (model number: BS-30KP365), has been involved in 76 reported incidents—72 of which involved swelling and four that resulted in fire.
