Flu Cases Surge Across Queensland, Health Authorities Urge Immediate Vaccination Flu cases are rapidly rising across Queensland, prompting urgent calls from health authorities for residents to get vaccinated.

Over 3050 influenza cases were reported in the past week alone — the highest number ever recorded in a single week in the state.

More than 210 individuals have been hospitalised during this period, with over 90% of them unvaccinated.

Queensland Flu Cases Hit Record Highs as Health Officials Warn of Worsening Outbreak

On average, 129 hospital beds were occupied daily last week by flu patients,” said Dr Heidi Carroll. This is an increase from the previous week, where the average was 112 beds per day.

Flu-related hospitalisations are expected to surpass those for COVID-19 in the coming weeks. In comparison, COVID-19 patients occupied an average of 165 beds daily across Queensland last week.

Dr Carroll emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective protection against severe flu-related illness, which can be life-threatening for young children and the elderly.

Vaccination is the best defence against winter viruses — it helps stop the transmission chain and prevents serious illness,” she said.

Experts are particularly concerned about an expected rise in cases when schools resume next week.

Flu Hospitalisations May Surpass COVID-19 Cases Soon

Children are more prone to catching and spreading the flu, which increases community transmission.

Moreover, young children are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from the virus,” Dr Carroll warned.

Unvaccinated Individuals at Higher Risk of Severe Illness

So far this year, Queensland has recorded more than 32,600 laboratory-confirmed flu cases.

However, health officials believe the real number of infections circulating in the community is much higher — and the virus continues to spread rapidly.
