Melbourne Zoo gorilla Kimya death : Melbourne Zoo is examining the sudden and unforeseen passing of Kimya, a 20-year-old gorilla.
In a statement, the zoo expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Western Lowland Gorilla, who died this morning.
“Kimya passed away unexpectedly today, and veterinarians are conducting a necropsy to determine the cause,” a spokesperson stated.

Kimya arrived at Melbourne Zoo in 2013 from the Taronga Conservation Society and quickly formed a strong bond with Otana, a 24-year-old male gorilla.
In 2015, the pair welcomed their offspring, Kanzi, the first gorilla born at Melbourne Zoo in 15 years.
Zoo staff fondly remembered Kimya as an intelligent, observant, and independent animal.

The zoo described Kimya as a devoted mother who lovingly taught Kanzi essential gorilla skills while also raising awareness about her species’ struggles in the wild through initiatives like “They’re Calling On You.”

“She was a beloved favorite among members and visitors at Melbourne Zoo. Our thoughts are with the entire team, especially her dedicated keepers, many of whom cared for Kimya for over a decade,” the statement added.
