The passionate surfer was remembered as both a “hero” and a “family man” after tragically losing his life in a shark attack over the weekend.
The family of Mercury Psillakis, 57, who was killed in a rare shark attack at Sydney’s northern beaches, paid tribute to him as a “hero” for having warned his friends about the nearby predator.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, his wife, daughter, and family described Mercury as a “loving, devoted, and ridiculously fun husband, father, son, brother, and loyal friend,” confirming his death following the fatal attack at Dee Why on Saturday.
This is a statement so difficult to write, as no words can truly capture the amazing, humorous, and beautiful man he was — everyone felt it,” the family shared.
There is so much more we wish to say, but no statement can fully do him justice.
Tragic Loss: Mercury Psillakis Remembered as Hero and Devoted Family Man
The 57-year-old had gone out surfing with several friends before being fatally attacked just a day prior to Father’s Day, leaving behind his wife and daughter.
“Merc is deeply loved by everyone who knew him. He was Maria’s soulmate, our closest friend, and the most devoted father to Freedom, his daughter, of whom he was incredibly proud,” the statement read.
Their connection was exceptional, and he always put his family above all else. His loved ones meant everything to him.
Merc was impossible not to love — his energy was vibrant and magnetic, his spirit playful, and he brought joy and happiness to every interaction.
An experienced surfer regarded as a “keystone” of the local community, Merc was widely known in the area, with his brother Mike running the custom surfboard shop, Psillakis Surfboards.

He was crowned club champion in 1994 by the Long Reef Boardriders Association, a group organised by the local surfing community.
When Merc took an interest in something, he threw himself into it completely, excelling with passion, dedication, and focus,” the family shared.
He had a wide range of hobbies — earning a black belt in taekwondo, travelling extensively in pursuit of great waves, and spending countless hours with his family, always ensuring they felt cherished and loved.

Merc also had a deep passion for rare palm trees, earning the affectionate nickname ‘The Germinator.’ Fellow palm enthusiasts would jokingly say he could even germinate a rock — a tribute to his remarkable ability to nurture life from the most unlikely seeds.
He surfed every day, driven by his profound love for the ocean, which was one of his greatest passions. Merc was also deeply connected to the surfing community, which has been incredibly supportive during this heartbreaking time, sharing in our grief.
The statement also confirmed that the Dee Why local had “saved his friends in the surf” by warning them of the circling shark, gathering the group of surfers to safety before he was tragically taken by an estimated 5-meter-long shark.
He fully understood the dangers of the ocean, and although he loved surfing, he was always careful to prioritize safety.
