Dr Kate Adams mortgage broker : After putting down a deposit on a multi-million-dollar home, Dr. Adams approached a mortgage broker, but his response to her request left her stunned.
A prominent Australian doctor was left shocked after a mortgage broker made a bold assumption that left her furious.
Dr. Kate Adams, a veterinarian and cast member of The Real Housewives of Sydney — who has also completed half a law degree — says she is still regularly underestimated by men.
At 42, and as the owner of Bondi Vet clinic, she told news.com.au that two years ago she was finally in a position to purchase a home in Sydney’s prestigious eastern suburbs.
I’ve bought and sold properties throughout my life to eventually reach a point where I could afford something I truly wanted to live in,” she said.
Dr. Adams had her eye on a $3.5 million property and moved quickly, putting down a deposit even though she hadn’t secured financial pre-approval.
While the decision carried some risk, she felt confident thanks to her strong income and multiple investment properties.
With just four weeks until the unconditional settlement, she urgently sought out a mortgage broker to arrange the loan.
She noted that, given the property’s $3.5 million value, she needed to borrow what she called “a reasonably large figure for a single female” — and it had to happen quickly.
However, when she reached out to a broker recommended by a friend and disclosed the sum she required, his first reaction was complete silence.
He told me, ‘before we go any further, I should let you know that the bank won’t accept income from OnlyFans,’” she recalled.
Dr. Adams said her first thought was, “Wow, the subconscious misogyny is off the charts!
She was stunned that a mortgage broker would leap to such a bizarre assumption.
It’s as if he believes the only way women can earn a living is through OnlyFans,” she said.
the broker quickly became embarrassed and apologetic.
Still, the encounter left her furious and deeply frustrated.
Who assumes that just because a single woman is asking to borrow a large sum of money, she must be on OnlyFans? And honestly, what’s even wrong with OnlyFans? Money is money!” she said.
Dr. Adams pointed out that the broker knew nothing about her and yet made an outrageous assumption on the spot.
He had absolutely no information about me. What if I wasn’t Dr. Kate Adams? This is exactly what women are forced to deal with,” she said.
Although this incident was a blatant example of sexism, she added that men undermining her is something she faces constantly.
Stop treating me like a second-rate citizen,” she demanded.
Dr. Kate Adams Shocked by Mortgage Broker’s Sexist Assumption
The Australian vet says she’s had far too many sexist encounters to count, but a few recent ones are still fresh in her mind.
Not long ago, she invited a tradesman to her home to provide a quote for new floorboards.
When she asked him a straightforward question, his response was, “You don’t need to worry your pretty little head about that.”
He then followed up by asking if she had a husband he could speak with instead.
While the bias isn’t always that overt in property dealings, she often notices real estate agents dismissing her.
Rather than engaging with her directly, they tend to focus on couples and address all the key questions to the men.
She admits it’s disheartening to see women still treated this way, especially when she’s so passionate about financial independence for women.
I even saw my sister face the same kind of treatment when she applied for her loan,” she said.
Building Financial Security Through Property Investment
Dr. Adams explained that she began investing in real estate because she wanted financial independence and a secure retirement plan without having to rely on a man.
“As a small-business owner, I don’t have superannuation,” she said.
Another motivating factor was that she couldn’t afford to purchase in the area she actually wanted to live.
Instead, she chose to rent close to her work in Sydney’s east while investing in properties she could afford elsewhere as part of a long-term strategy.
Gone are the days when you can simply buy a home and settle in it. When you’re young, you can’t afford the house you truly want,” she said.
You can’t buy an apartment in Bondi or anywhere in the eastern suburbs. You have to go further out and buy whatever is within your budget.
Dr. Adams has spent decades purchasing properties, renovating them, and later reselling after capital growth. Over the years, she’s bought and sold at least five properties across different parts of Australia.
Lessons from Dr. Kate Adams’ Property and Finance Journey
Her investment strategy is straightforward.
Put a tenant in the property so the rent covers the mortgage, then simply wait for the market to rise,” she explained.

Once you reach a point where you can make capital gains, you sell and move on to something better.
She’s also enjoyed significant wins, including purchasing a terrace in Erskineville before the area’s property market took off—now the home has doubled in value.
Everyone said I overpaid and called me an idiot,” she recalled.
Dr. Adams says she trusted her instincts with the Erskineville property, and that kind of investment success is what ultimately allowed her to afford buying a home in the area she truly wanted to live.
