Selena Gomez Reveals How Her Iconic Friendship with Taylor Swift Began
While chatting with Jake Shane on his Therapuss podcast, Selena Gomez shared that she and Taylor Swift met around 16 years ago, back when they were both dating members of the Jonas Brothers — which, in hindsight, makes perfect sense.
I was dating Nick and she was dating Joe. It was all very sweet — we were so young,” Gomez laughed.
Despite the slightly messy breakups and the emotional songs that followed (yes, Last Kiss, we mean you), Gomez shared that everyone in the group is now on good terms.
We all know and care about each other now. We had no idea what we were doing back then,” she said.
A Friendship Born from Teenage Love and Breakups
Taylor and I always say that the best thing those relationships gave us was each other.
Gomez, who was about 15 when they met and Swift around 18, recalled their first meeting happened during Taylor’s iconic “crazy curly hair” phase — a time both stars look back on fondly.
The Jonas Brothers Connection That Started It All
She had bracelets stacked all the way up her arms. I think Love Story was the first song she ever played for me — and it hadn’t even been released yet,” Gomez recalled.
I was in a hotel room, and I remember it so clearly. It was one of those songs that, the moment I heard it, I thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever listened to.’

The two quickly became best friends in their teens after bonding over their breakups — and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
I’m not sure how… we just stayed by each other’s side through all the highs and lows that followed — and here we are, 16 years later,” Gomez shared.
