Michael J. Fox rare red carpet appearance : The beloved actor, who first captured audiences more than four decades ago, stepped onto the red carpet in New York City accompanied by his family.
Michael J. Fox made a rare public appearance this week, joining his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four adult children in New York during an especially meaningful moment for the star, who has been living with Parkinson’s disease since 1991.
At the gala for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, hosted at Casa Cipriani, Fox shared that he is still humbled and a bit surprised by his family’s steadfast support.
Fox Praises His Family for Standing by Him Through the Years
They’ve always stood by me, and they continue to do so, year after year,” he shared with People.
Now 64, the actor credits Pollan and their children — son Sam, 36; twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler, 30; and their youngest, Esme, 24 — for their unwavering support throughout his journey since the diagnosis.
They’re incredibly supportive and just wonderful,” he said.
I step onto the red carpet and still find myself surprised to see them there … then I think, ‘Why am I even surprised?’”
Tracy Pollan Opens Up About the Challenges of Parkinson’s
Pollan, in her own conversation with People, spoke about the profound challenges Parkinson’s brings — not only for the person diagnosed but for the entire family.
Michael is incredibly optimistic … but it’s important to recognise that this is a major challenge. It’s extremely difficult for the family, for caregivers, and of course, for the patient,” she said.
The gala drew a host of well-known stars, including Kate Bosworth, Justin Long, Nikki Glaser, Katie Couric, Julianna Margulies, and Joan Jett, among many others.
The event also highlighted the remarkable progress the foundation has achieved. Since its launch in 2000, the organisation has contributed more than US$2.5 billion (A$3.06 billion) toward Parkinson’s research.
You never really know what’s required until you see what it takes. I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve accomplished,” Fox reflected.
It marks another milestone in Fox’s long journey, beginning with his breakout role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
A Star-Studded Gala and a Major Milestone
Fox shared in an interview that the film’s classic David-and-Goliath theme still feels relevant today.
We’re living in a culture full of bullies. They’re everywhere … In the movie, Biff is a bully. Time is a bully. And for me personally, Parkinson’s is a bully,” he told Empire Magazine.
It all comes down to how you face them—and the determination you bring into that fight.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Fox holds on to his trademark humour and resilience, saying he does his best to keep his sense of humour alive even as the disease progresses.
